Harvest Moon Kitchen Magic: Apple Pie to Honor Demeter with Juniper Deadwick

The harvest season reminds us that big, outward growth cannot happen all year! Inner, foundational growth is still possible in the dark season, but most importantly, it is a time for sustaining, and that is enough. Kitchen witchcraft can be especially effective during this time, since the emotional and nutritional payoff is immediate, even if the magical payoff takes time.

Demeter is one of the most predominant agricultural deities. As the mother of Persephone, her initial grief resulted in a crop-less famine, but a compromise allowing her daughter to return for half of the year resulted in Demeter dictating the seasons. Petitions and offerings are made to her for a bountiful and sustaining harvest to last until spring.

Though most commonly associated with wheat, any regional crop can represent and appease her—including apples! In this ritual, practitioners will be making apple pie from a magical perspective. Baking skills are not required! With each step, we will learn how to incorporate our intentions. The finished product will be taken home with instructions, to be baked and enjoyed immediately or frozen to be revived for a family/holiday celebration.

(Persephone was the first deity to reach out to Juniper in her practice. This relationship has since grown to also include her mother, Demeter, and the crone, Baubo. Persephone remains to be one of Juniper’s patron deities, along with the Lithuanian forest goddess, Medeinė.)

Juniper Deadwick considers herself a hedge witch, placing nature at the center of her practice. Her primary methods include herbals, household hearth craft, animal allies, and spirit work, with an avid interest in folklore and mythology. Though her work is mainly solitary, she enjoys sharing knowledge with others, and connecting to honor the seasons and Wheel of the Year!

Workshops will take place in the Deadwick's Common Room. They begin at 6pm, and run approximately an hour to an hour and a half. Please enter through the front of Deadwick's upon arrival, at 19 Sheafe St. and allow time for parking. Please call ahead if you are running late.
