Storied Stones: Colonial Gravestone Iconography & Cemetery Tour with Juniper Deadwick
Friday, May 8th at 6pm, $44/person
The Point of Graves in Portsmouth was established in 1671, and as one of New England’s oldest cemeteries, it contains many of these examples, carved by notable funerary artists. Gravestone imagery and iconography was one of the few accepted art forms amongst Puritan colonists, and much of the symbolism continues to be adapted today. It is also one of the city’s most famously “haunted” spaces!
In this workshop, we will step between the stones of time on a tour of the Point of Graves (and learn why Juniper uses the word haunted sparingly)!
Guests will learn about historic burial traditions, appropriate funerary and visitation etiquette, and say hello to the spirits who reside in this sacred place. Please meet us at Deadwick's upon arrival for this workshop.
Juniper Deadwick is a hedge witch with a passion for folklore and mythology, and the leader of Deadwick’s Spectral Strolls, our seasonal ghost tours! Her primary interests include herbs, household magic, animal allies, and ancestor/spirit work. In her own words, she “comes from a long line of gravediggers” and spent much of her childhood in cemeteries, under the watchful eye of her grandparents, who were steadfast caretakers of the departed. Her grandmother passed on a lifelong passion for the history and symbolism of funerary traditions.
This workshop begins at 6pm and will run for approximately one and a half hours. Please meet at Deadwick's, 19 Sheafe St. and allow time for parking. Please call us at 603-319-6946 if you are running late.
