By Stitch and Knot: An Introduction to Textile Magic with Fern Deadwick

Humans have been creating and working with textiles for thousands of years. Various techniques have developed over the centuries, from tablet-woven belts to brain-tanned hides. What originated as a craft of necessity evolved into highly complex art forms and lifeways. Wherever humans have been, they’ve brought textile work with them, adjusting and developing their methods to suit their environments.

The unique relationship humans have to these materials is exemplified through the use of textile in folk magic. Whether embroidering magical symbols into the inside of a coat, crafting charm bags, or knotting red threads, textiles have been used to all manner of magical ends.

In this workshop attendees will be introduced to various methods of working with textiles in a magical context, as well as what materials are appropriate for certain workings, color associations, and more, all from an experienced textile worker.

Fern Deadwick (they/them) is a völva, trollkona, and a multi-media artist. Growing up on a farm in New Hampshire, they have spent their entire life interacting with spirits. Their practice is deeply rooted in the animist beliefs of the Norse tradition, and informed by their relationships to the spirits of land and place. Day-to-day, Fern can be found crafting in their studio or out in the garden spending time with their poisonous plants.

Workshops will take place in the Deadwick's Common Room. They run approximately an hour and a half. Please enter through the front of Deadwick's upon arrival, at 19 Sheafe St. and allow time for parking. Please call ahead at 603-319-6946 if you are running late.
