Fetching the Familiar: An Ensouled Talisman Ritual and Workshop with Fern Deadwick
Friday, November 21st at 6pm $50
Stories of the witch and their familiar ring out through the ages. We often think of black cats, toads, and even owls, but any animal may serve a practitioner as a familiar. They may assist in all manner of workings, whether stealing your neighbor’s butter, gathering ingredients, or seeking information. Rather than a living, breathing animal, this workshop will explore the familiar as a spirit companion.
With folklore as a guide, local taxidermist and artisan Fern will guide attendees through the process of awakening an animal spirit through the use of animal remains, familiarizing oneself with it and forming a bond, and crafting a wearable talisman to aid attendees in working with this spirit from an animistic framework.
Everyone will be provided with either a bone, claw, or tooth from an animal that has explicitly stated it wishes to be worked with in this way, as well as cotton cord and beads to adorn the talisman with.
Fern Deadwick is a practicing witch and pagan in the Old Norse animist tradition. As a result, they are something of an amateur historian. They are a student of the runes, a card reader, and work heavily with the spirit realm in the reconstructed magic tradition of their ancestors.
Workshops will take place in the Deadwick's Common Room. They begin at 6pm, and run approximately an hour to an hour and a half. Please enter through the front of Deadwick's upon arrival, at 19 Sheafe St. and allow time for parking. Please call ahead if you are running late.
